Travel to Texas for one of the most exhilaratingly colorful adventures in North America. From Honkey-Tonks and dude ranches to space science and modern medicine, Texas is an intriguing accumulation of larger than life metropolises and countryside. Snag your airfare to Texas in fewer seconds than a bull ride and you’ll be happy to find a cheap and easy way into the second largest state of the United States of America.

Six Flags Over Texas

Throughout Texan history, the territory has in fact been ruled by six different flags: France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America. As you might have guessed, Arlington, Texas, is home to the first Six Flags theme park in the nation. Even with this many political changes, the state the size of France has maintained a fiercely independent culture and lifestyle, which contributes to the unique charm and humble pride you will encounter when you travel Texas.

Make sure a stop in San Antonio is on your itinerary. There you can visit the Alamo mission, the famous site of the tragic Battle of Alamo where Texas fought for its independence from Mexico. Texas then became an independent republic for nearly 10 whole years until annexing to the United States in 1845.

More than Yellow Roses in Texas

From the annual Chili Cookoff to the world’s largest rodeo, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Texan culture is bigger than life. A trip to Houston offers the Johnson Space Center where Mission Control is based as well as the nation’s largest medical research facility, the Texas Medical Center. A journey to the western Texan border is where you’ll find El Paso, brimming with authentic Hispanic culture and just a short distance from the stately Rio Grande.

Big Bend National Park is a protected stretch of the Rio Grande, abundant with forest, desert, snakes, flora and a wide array of native wildlife. You may also stumble across a political creature in Lajitas, where the town mayor is in fact a real beer-guzzling goat! For more beautiful scenery, make your way through Austin’s surrounding countryside, known as Hill Country. A mosaic of wildflowers along rolling hills stretches for miles around Austin and the German city of Fredericksburg.

When planning your trip, remember the massive quality of the state. The best way to explore all of the urban and rural wonders in Texas is certainly by car. This way you can be certain to make it to the largest Honkey-Tonk in the world, Billy Bob’s, just west of Dallas in Fort Worth or down to the Gulf Coast to witness King Ranch, one of the largest working ranches in the world (the size of Rhode Island!). Buy those boots, find that hat, and get your airfare to Texas today before it gets any bigger.

What do Clearwater, Florida and New Ipswich, New Hampshire have in common? The undeniably attention worthy sculptor, Nina Winters.

The art world’s new and important arrival has been discovered by aesthetic savants for her monumental sculptures.

The internationally collected sculptor has just won a 1/4 million dollar commission in the State of Nevada. The project is for a 10 foot high sculpture titled “Exhilaration”.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Nina and getting personal tours through her studios.

This article is the first of three in a series about recent major commissions by the sculptor.

When I asked Nina to tell me about this recent commission, she said, “Although this sculpture is basically minimalist, I have paid a great deal of attention to detail. The reach of the hands into the sky reflects my philosophy that man can be and do far more than what he is led to believe.”

The sculpture will be the centerpiece of a major new 2 billion dollar complex. The development will break ground in June-July 2007.

The sheer scale of her latest work,’ Exhilaration’, and the environment in which it will be installed, are integral elements in creating the visual excitement for the viewer.

During the tour of her beautiful waterside studio in Clearwater, Florida, I asked Nina why she had chosen to work in bronze. She explained, “ I create human emotions, hopes and truths and make them in bronze. I want them to last through time.”

I traveled north and met with Nina in her self-built studio in the woods of New Hampshire, I was intrigued by the ecologically minded sculptor’s commitment to our planet’s and our planet’s peoples’ physical, emotional and spiritual health.

She showed me over 40 sculptures she had created that were ready to be enlarged to monumental proportions.

She spoke easily about her feelings. “Even in my early years, I knew that we had to work together to change the world. I started by trying my hand at building an ecological studio/home in the woods. I built the house with the help of a few friends and still use it in the summers. It’s quite simple to use solar power and we built the house with only a chain saw and lots of work.”

She continued, “As I grew in stature as an artist, I wanted to positively affect more people. I try to imbue my work with so much emotion that it will flow from me into the bronze and communicate at the other end to the viewer.”

I asked why she decided to make her works large. She replied, “My work was purchased by many collectors, but I still felt the need to make monumental works that would be seen by hundreds of thousands of people. I am thrilled that this is happening.”

Working in her studios is practically an obsession. Her work is large both visually and emotionally. Her sculptures convey the heroic power and excitement of the human potential.

Her clients include corporate officials from Paine Webber, the Wall Street Group and Hiram Walker. Her work is in major collections in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and England and she is in the private collections of many celebrities including musicians, music producers, arrangers and film producers.

Her bronze work was featured in the Paramount film “Kiss the Girls” starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd.

She has been honored with awards for excellence in sculptural concept and design.

All her sculptures can be commissioned in any size and are unique solutions for home, corporate and hotel architecture.

She is also working on a new monumental sculpture in Clearwater that will be installed near her southern studio in a development on the locally loved “Pinellas Trail”, a long fought for bicycling, running and rollerblading trail that connects many of the nearby areas.

Although relatively few people suffer from the full effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), as many as a third of the population are estimated to feel miserable during the long, cold winter nights. And the main reason for this is simply down to the lack of sunlight.

It has been known for a number of years now that the sun affects people’s moods, and as daylight decreases in the winter months, many people experience a mental ‘dip’. And it’s this seasonal mental dip that is leading an increasing amount of people to take their main holiday out with the normal summer months, as a means of providing some respite from the dark, wintry nights.

A popular location for many people seeking to escape the winter blues is Florida. Aptly known as the ‘sunshine state’, Florida experiences good weather all year round, and has been a fashionable winter and summer destination for US and international visitors for many years.

Florida is unique among other US states, in that it is a peninsula which means it is surrounded by water, with the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, encapsulating over 1000 miles of coastline. And as with anywhere that is surrounded by water, there is mile upon mile of fantastic beaches to enjoy.

Daytona Beach is a wonderful year-round resort area that is often referred to as being ‘the world’s most famous beach’, attracting 8 million visitors each year, with an equally impressive array of places to stay, meaning finding a suitable hotel in Daytona beach should be hassle-free.

The city is also renowned for its motorsports, being the home of the Daytona International Speedway, a 2.5 mile tri-oval race track with a capacity to hold 168,000 spectators. It hosts the famous Daytona 500, which is a 200 lap/500 mile NASCAR race held annually, and is regarded by many as the most important race in the NASCAR calendar

Of course, Florida has much more to offer than sun, sand and speedway. Disney World - perhaps one of the most famous resorts in the world - is located in Orlando, a mere 50 miles from Daytona Beach.

Disney World is the benchmark for what most other resorts strive for. A sprawling metropolis in its own right, it was once the size of San Francisco and receives tens of millions of visitors every year. Perhaps its most famous area is Disney’s Hollywood Studios, consisting of five themed areas contained within a mass of streets and buildings, with rides, shows, restaurants and many more star attractions all fighting for the attention of the throngs of people that visit each day.

As the self-proclaimed ‘Sunshine State’, it’s not difficult to see why so many people choose to descend upon Florida’s sandy shores each year. With year-round warm weather, mile upon mile of shoreline and some of the world’s most prestigious attractions, there is sure to be no shortage of activities to help blow those winter cobwebs away.

Anyone who has a flair for the good life knows that there are many places in Mexico that offer just that. Out of the numerous coastal resort-type offerings in the region, Puerto Vallarta is probably the biggest epitome of wonderland.

You will never run out of things to do at Puerto Vallarta. Aside from the sprawling greens that carpet its wide golf courses, there also are great art galleries and whale watching trips that will delight the interest of any traveler hoping to learn new things. And if you’re searching for a great place to stay minus the commercialism of hotels, Puerto Vallarta condo rentals are your home away from home.

Puerto Vallarta has a certain appeal that entices any kind of traveler. Its rich history permits it to be the bearer of so many interesting tales. Its people are also so hospitable you wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else. Most of all, luxuries spell for excellent savings in expenses. You can have a truly Mexican experience with all the comforts and luxuries by taking advantage of Puerto Vallarta rentals.

Los Muertos has one of the finest beaches in the world. Even a short walk at the breathtaking Los Muertos walkway will give the respite you need from the bustle of daily living. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, gives so many wonderful experiences that it would perhaps take a book to discuss and describe all.

Plaza Mar houses some of the best Puerto Vallarta condos. For instance, the Zona Romantica, found in Los Muertos, is just a short distance away from restos, shopping centers, and banks. Furthermore, Plaza Mar is also equipped with real Mexican amenities, just to complete your experience in Mexico. One other fantastic thing about Plaza Mar is its twenty-four-hour security, so you don’t have to be concerned about a thing.

You need not break the bank to enjoy Puerto Vallarta. In fact, taking into account all the luxuries you will get to enjoy, Puerto Vallarta condo rental is very reasonable. But if you want to fully rent the place, you better stay there in off-peak seasons, from early part of May until late of October.

Overall, leasing condos at Puerto Vallarta, instead of checking in at hotels, is a more sensible alternative when you come to enjoy a truly Mexican vacation. It’s much more logical to spend more on leisure in your travel than on accommodations, right?

Monster from the Ocean Floor

B-movie master Roger Corman cut his teeth on this campy thriller starring Anne Kimball as a sexy artist vacationing in Mexico. Unfortunately, she catches the eye (or eyes, as it were, since the monster in question has many of them) of a gruesome maritime creature that first started attacking humans after the Bikini Island disaster. The monster especially detests her marine-biologist beau (Stuart Wade), which puts him in grave danger.

The Panama Canal has been called “the big ditch”, “the bridge between two continents” and “the greatest shortcut in the world”.
One look at the immensity of the Panama Canal, and you will understand why a French company with a labor force of 10,000 men went bankrupt trying to excavate it. The project, while conceived in 1534 by Charles I of Spain, began in 1882 and ended seven years later in disaster with over 22,000 people dead from disease and pestilence.

The United States took over the assets of a French company in 1902 and began the process of finishing the canal.

It is a epic story, appreciated best by transiting the canal by ship, viewing what many historians say changed the face of the industrial world.

This 51 mile water tollway shaved over 7,900 nautical miles off the distance between New York and San Francisco.

Sailing the Panama Canal not only offers a rich detailed and fascinating history narrated by an on-board Canal historian; it is the natural beauty that surprises most of all - an ever changing panorama of jungle clad hills, shimmering Lake Gatun, the high arched span of the America’s Bridge, and of course the intricate workings of the locks and gates themselves.

As you approach the canal from the Atlantic you travel through 7.2 kilometers of dredged channel. Your ship then proceeds for a little over 11 kilometers slightly westward before reaching the Gatun Locks. Huge ocean liners are lifted, as if they were toys, 85 feet by three sets of locks, to the level of Gatun Lake. This lake resulted from damming the Chagres River and broaching the Continental Divide. This combined with the Gaillard Cut was a feat equal to digging a trench 10 feet deep by 55 feet wide from New York to California.

Passing through Gatun Lake to the mouth of the Gaillard Cut and down the 13 kilometer channel, you arrive at the Pedro Miguel Lock, which has a drop of 31 feet. This lock borders Miraflores Lake, about 55 feet above the level of the Pacific. Your ship continues about 2 kilometers through Miraflores Lake and reaches two Miraflores Locks. These locks lower your ship to Pacific tidewater levels. Leaving the Miraflores Locks you continue 4 kilometers to Balboa on the Gulf of Panama.

From the deck of your ship or your own private balcony, you’ll marvel as the locks open one into the other. The locks are double to allow one ship to be raised while another is being lowered. The lock chambers on the Panama Canal are 1000 feet long and 110 feet wide. Transit time through the canal is usually seven to eight hours. As a counterpoint, there is the natural wonder that surrounds the man-made one; a lush, virgin rain forest; impenetrable and inviolate, except for the canal. Imagine yourself watching the sun rise in the Atlantic and set in the Pacific. Visit Mayan ruins and colonial cities.

You can watch cliff divers plunge from dizzying heights or hike in a cloud forest where hummingbirds dart in greater numbers than crows back home.

Early in 2000 the United States turned over 100% control of the canal to Panama after jointly sharing its protection and control since 1977. The final cost of the canal US$336 million dollars which is less than the cost of the new cruise ships that pass through.

While transiting the canal is an incredible experience, remember your cruise, depending upon itinerary, will also take you to places like Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica; Cartegena, Columbia; Santa Cruz; Zihuatanejo and Hualtulco, Mexico or perhaps Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Oranjestad, Aruba or possibly Willemstad, Curacao and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Engineered as carefully as the Canal itself, these cruises combine just the right number of exciting ports with long, leisurely days at sea. And no matter which direction you go, you’ll discover a remarkable collection of wonders, both natural and man-made.

Stay tuned, this year marks the start of a great expansion of the Panama Canal, another engineering marvel, but that is a whole other story…

Planning is key to enjoying a great vacation when visiting Mexico. Taking the time to plan your trip ahead of time is the best way to enjoy your vacation. Planning is not only needed to enjoy your vacation, but to stay within your budget, have access to entertainment, and have a backup plan should anything go awry.

When creating a Mexico travel plan, it is advised that you include the cost of your trip, as well as your spending money. If you are planning a family trip, you may want to let your children participate in the plan by letting them decide where they like to go and what they like to see. A Mexico travel plan is also important because it can and should be used to manage your time. Careful planning can prevent burnout. You are encouraged to make a list of the top destinations that you would like to see. Be sure to include museums, beaches, historical landmarks, and anything else that peaks your interest.

Planning your budget will help prevent spending on an impulse. You will find that there are many opportunities to purchase souvenirs in Mexico. With a preplanned budget, you should be able to enjoy the benefits of Mexican shopping. You can easily use calculators to determine the exchange rate between the United States and Mexico. Taking the exchange rate into consideration is the best way to effectively budget your money. You should also plan for tipping when preparing your budget.

If you decide to vacation at an all-inclusive resort, then the cost of airfare, hotel, and food will be provided for. However, it is important to note that certain restrictions may apply. At an all-inclusive resort, you will have to pay for the extras, so make sure that you include anything that you may to purchase. Extra money should be set aside for shopping in the markets and traveling outside of your resort.

Planning for your entertainment ahead of time will help to prevent overspending. You should determine ahead of time what activities you would like to engage in. Planning and budgeting for your Mexico vacation can be difficult, especially when it comes to entertainment. You may find that you and your family will want to make a last minute stop. This is why it is advised that you plan for unexpected stops and purchases. If you have already set aside some money for an unexpected activity, you will not have to worry about the cost of a last minute decision.

Finally, your plan should consist of contact information and an emergency back up plan. Whenever you are visiting a foreign country, it is important that you create an itinerary with all of your information and the details of your trip. That itinerary should be left with a close friend, family member, neighbor, or co-worker. In addition, you should also register with the United States Embassy or Consulate offices when you arrive. If anything happens while you are in Mexico, seeking the help of the U.S. Embassy or the nearest consulate office will provide the quickest and most effective assistance.

Before leaving for Mexico, make sure that you have up-to-date passports for all family members, as well as other forms of identification. By creating a travel plan, sticking to your budget, and creating an emergency backup plan, you can ensure that you family will have a wonderful vacation in Mexico.

Each year, a large number of individuals, couples, and families make the decision to travel to Mexico. Most have visited Mexico before. If you are planning a Mexico vacation, and you have never been there before, you may have some concerns. You may be wondering what places are safe for you to visit.

Mexico is like all other countries. There are areas that are known as tourists attractions and then there are other areas that tourists are advised to stay away from. You can easily learn about these areas online. Researching every city and town in Mexico is a long and daunting process. To save time and a costly vacation mistake, you are encouraged to examine the benefits of taking a guided Mexico tour.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of booking a guided tour in Mexico is that you will be with a local who is familiar with the area. Guided tours are held in areas that are considered safe. In addition to showing you around certain areas of Mexico, your tour guide may be able to offer you additional travel tips and suggestions. These suggestions may help you with your vacation after your guide has ended.

If you are interested in taking a guided Mexican tour, you will have to find the tour company which you wish to do business with. There are a large nubmer of guided tour companies in the area. If you do not have a preference as to which company you like to tour with, you may want to first search for a destination. The destination you select will be important in determining what you will learn and see while on a guided tour.

Many guided tours take place in Cooper Canyon, the Oaxaca Mountains, the Yucatan Peninsula and Baja. In Mexico, Baja is most known for its water activities. Many popular guided tours include whale watching and kayaking. Whether you set out to watch the whales or you select a kayaking tour, you are sure to see Gray whales. Many times, they will come right up to your boat, making for great pictures or video footage.

Cooper Canyon and the Oaxaca Mountains are guided tours that are ideal for those that love to hike. To participate in these tours, it is advised that you receive the proper health clearance. You tour will likely follow trails, but much of the terrain can be rough. The Yucatan Peninsula is ideal for travelers who wish to learn more about the ancient history of Mexico.

The above mentioned destinations in Mexico are just a few of the many. Guided tours are found all across Mexico. If there is particular topic or activity that interests you, you are sure to find a guided tour that will offer you excitement. Hikers often select a hiking tour, boats often opt for boat tours, and history lovers often select tours that focus on the history of Mexico.

In addition to selecting where you would like to go on a guided tour, you will also need to determine how long you like that tour to be. In Mexico, guided tours can last as long as one day or over one week. You should easily be able to determine how long a guided tour is by looking at the price. Weeklong guided tours can cost thousands of dollars, but most of your accommodations are taken care of. Some guided tours can be considered all-inclusive vacations.

Journey Mexico, Siesta Tours, and Ufly Mexico are three of the most well-known guided tour companies in Mexico. You can examine the tours found by these three companies by visiting their online websites or by requesting free travel brochures. If you are interested in finding additional tours, your local travel agent may be able to offer you assistance.

By selecting a guided tour of Mexico, you do not always have to be looking over your shoulder. Vacationing in a safe area with an experienced tour guide is about as carefree as your Mexico vacation can get.

Are you interested in vacationing in Mexico? If you are, have you already made your vacation plans? If not, you will have to start making those plans soon. When it comes to scheduling a Mexico vacation, you have a nubmer of different ways to make your reservations. You may be wondering which method is the best.

Booking a Mexico vacation is similar to booking a vacation anywhere else in the world. Before making reservations, you will have to select a vacation destination. Mexico is a large area that has a number of popular tourist attractions. If you are interested in vacationing at a well-known resort, booking your vacation may be easy. The most well-known vacation destinations in Mexico include beach resorts and golf resorts.

If you are interested in staying a resort, it is likely that the resort will have an online website. Many popular resorts in Mexico allow you to make and pay for your reservations online. If you are pressed for time or are looking for a simple way to book your Mexico vacation reservations, you may find this method of booking the best. While beach and golf resorts are popular in Mexico, they are not the only place that you can stay while on vacation. Many individuals prefer to stay at a traditional hotel. Staying at on offshore hotel or dinning at an offshore restaurant is a cheaper alternative to vacationing at a resort. To book online reservations at these locations, you will have to find a well-known restaurant or a well-known hotel. The more popular a facility is, the more likely they will be to allow the online booking of reservations.

In addition to making your reservations online directly with a hotel, restaurant, or resort, you can use the services of an online travel website. Many online travel websites are also known as discount travel websites. This is because many of the sites offer valuable savings and discounts to internet users. Popular travel websites include Obtitz, Expedia, and Travelocity. With a discount travel website, it may be possible for you to book your travel accommodations and overnight accommodations all at once. Many individuals enjoy booking their own vacations because it gives them the ability to have some freedom. While there are a nubmer of benefits to planning and scheduling your own vacation, it is often a time consuming process. If you are interested in seeking assistance, you may want to obtain the services of a travel agent. Travel agents can not only offer you Mexico vacation suggestions, but they can also make all of your reservations for you.

If your vacation destination is centered in an area that is not known as a tourist attraction, you may have a more difficult time making your reservations. This is because many unknown hotels, restaurants, golf courses, and resorts do not allow the online booking of reservations. To make a reservation you will most likely have to contact the golf course, restaurant, or hotel directly. If you are unable to find the information, you may want to obtain the services of a professional travel agent.

Whether you book your own reservations or you use the assistance of a travel agent, your vacation can be scheduled with ease. Once you make the appropriate reservations, you can begin preparing for your Mexico adventure.
