I Love Mexican Vacations
Vacations in Mexico remain one of the best travel deals available.
What is the cheapest city to retire in Mexico? Cost of living? My parents are going to San Miguel de Allende.
My parents are not great on the internet and I want to give them as much info as possible before they make the trip to go look at real estate, apts, condos etc.
San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful town, so your parents will be very happy there. And for a couple 2000 usd a month is enough to live very well (not as millionairs, but as middle class). However, you can find cities much cheaper than San Miguel de Allende. If you are looking very cheap and safe/quiet places: Querétaro, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, or any non-touristic city (Avoid cities with sea). If they are more cosmopolitas then Mexico City is the option. They can also live with 2000 usd a month and is not as dangeroues as it seams. But, Zacatecas, Querétaro and Aguascalientes are much more safer.

San Miguel is going to be one of the more expensive for gringos - because there are a lot of gringos there. You'll find the same in the Chapala/Ajijic area - just south of Guadalajara.
I don't think cheap is what you should be asking for. They need to decide what kind of place will satisfy them. Do they need a gringo community, what kind of climate, distance from beaches, shopping, airports, etc.
Travel around spending a few weeks at least in a few places. Relax, go on vacation, look around !!!

All tourist spots and retirement communities have websites, Just type in the name of the city or state: example, San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. S.M. is very beautiful, artsy, and expensive. Big gringo community, all services. You might look at Rosarito Beach and Baja California's "Gold Coast", new condos, growing fast, popular with Californians and Arizonans, condos in the 200,000USD range, but some less expensive. Close to the US Border. Its good thing to have them go to a place, rent for a while and see if they like it before they make an investment. Mexico isn't for everybody. See gringogazettenorth.com

Mexico is really cheap compared to the US, but of course, touristic areas as San Miguel de Allende, Cancun, Cabos, etc are more expensive.

hi, theres a little town in mexico called Tequisquiapan, Queretaro, great for retirement, unexpensive, great weather, lots of tourists, none crime rate, theres no airport so you will need to fly to Queretaro then take a bus to Tequisquiapan

Life is pretty cheap everywhere. If you want to buy a house, stay away from the coast because if you buy a home in the beach cities, you have to pay a bank trust every year. If you plan to rent, dont worry about paying the bank trust. Queretaro is a beautifal city. Also Guadalajara and believe it or not Mexico City is inexpensive and has a lot of perks. Cuernavaca is also popular with the gringoes and much cheaper and more fun than San Miguel de Allende.
