I Love Mexican Vacations
Vacations in Mexico remain one of the best travel deals available.
Lap Band Surgery- U.s or Mexico
The Lap- band adjustable gastric banding system is a simple yet advanced gastric banding system that helps you gradually lose and control your weight by reducing the amount of food. It is approved by the FDA in 2001 for use in the United States. Thousands of women and men are undergoing weight loss surgery annually in USA.
There are many lap band and gastric banding clinics offering the procedure in both U.S and Mexico. The cost of lap band surgery has been decreasing in the United States over the past few years. The two main reasons are- the increased number of surgeons performing the operation and the competition from other foreign countries like Mexico and India.
Because of high costs of obesity related conditions such as diabetics, hypertension etc., many insurance providers are willing to cover the cost of weight loss procedure in USA.
Most states in U.S. have laws that require insurance companies to cover the cost of weight-loss surgery for patients, who meet the conditions established by the National Institute of Health. The price range is roughly $15000 to $20000 in USA for lap band surgery.
Mexico is a viable option for U.S citizens due to the proximity in geographical terms. Also, Lap band surgery in Mexico is significantly lower with respect to the cost compared to USA.
Many consider getting the lap band surgery done in Mexico because the entire process can be come within $ 8000 in Mexico. However, remember to add all your travel expenditures- airfare, hotel stays, rental cars and verify who pays what. And if somebody is accompanying you for support, so you need to account their expenses as well. The procedure itself is usually a one-night stay or less and the actual hospital cost is much less when compared to US costs. Even after considering travel and lodging expenses, a 40% to 50% cost saving can be achieved.
Before you go to Mexico for surgery check with your insurance company, whether surgery outside the United States is covered or not within its scheme. If not, then it would be better and safer to have your lap band surgery done in United States. Plus if any medical complications arise   post-surgery, you will be better protected legally.
While deciding on whether you do the lap band surgery in U.S or Mexico, one thing for sure you will get surgeons everywhere. However, you canât take risk on your health, therefore, a good experienced surgeon does matter a lot. The more experience, the better the outcomes. If you were to get the procedure done in abroad, it just makes the most sense to get the procedure done at the best possible clinic.

It’s major surgery. The last thing I would be looking at is cost. Especially since it’s not an emergency. If you need to save more money, do it. But don’t ever try to cut costs when looking for a major medical procedure. Find the best surgeon and use him or her. Don’t take a chance on complications including death to save a little money.

I can answer one part of the question, regarding Mexico. Sorry I can’t fully answer you…
My aunt goes to Mexico all of the time for surgeries. She has gotten about 6 different cosmetic surgeries done there because it is WAY cheaper. But, you have to weigh out the risks, which include why they are cheaper. The most common answer is because they do not require the Docs to have malpractice insurance. Good side? You may not need it if it’s a good doctor. My aunt finds people who were trained and worked in the US and just got sick of paying for "useless malpractice insurance"
I wouldn’t say completely write off surgery in Mexico, just PLEASE do a lot of research before you go.
Buen Suerte! (Good luck)

Weight loss surgery-like lap band surgery have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as Bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps
